Art Basel Paris 2026: Inside the Grand Palais’s Biggest Art Week

Art Basel Paris holds its 2026 edition from 23 to 25 October inside the Grand Palais, the glass-and-iron exhibition hall raised on the Champs-Élysées for the 1900 World’s Fair and reopened in 2024 after a four-year, nearly half-a-billion-euro renovation. Getting a fair of this scale back under that roof is itself part of the story: for decades the building hosted FIAC, France’s own contemporary art fair, until the Réunion des Musées Nationaux — which controls the venue — chose to hand the Grand Palais slot to the Swiss-based Art Basel group instead, ending FIAC’s run and installing a new fair in its place.

That new fair opened in 2022 as Paris+ par Art Basel, a deliberately transitional name, and was rebranded simply Art Basel Paris starting with the 2024 edition once the Grand Palais renovation was complete and the fair had established its own identity separate from the fair it replaced. The move gave Art Basel a fourth flagship city alongside Basel, Miami Beach, and Hong Kong, and gave Paris’s gallery scene — already reinforced by Bernard Arnault’s LVMH-backed expansion of the city’s museum and auction infrastructure — a fair built to compete directly with London’s Frieze Week the following week on the calendar.

The fair itself sits inside a wider Paris Art Week: the satellite fair Paris Internationale, a run of Marais and Saint-Germain gallery openings, and a museum calendar timed to the same visitors. For a city whose art market spent years being told it was losing ground to London, the Grand Palais’s return to full use has become something both galleries and city officials now point to as evidence of the opposite.
