The 16th Gwangju Biennale Opens With Its Smallest Artist List Yet

The Gwangju Biennale opened its 16th edition on 5 September 2026, running through 15 November under the title You must change your life — a line lifted from Rainer Maria Rilke’s poem “Archaic Torso of Apollo,” in which a fragment of ancient sculpture, gazed at long enough, seems to issue its viewer a command. Founded in 1995, the Gwangju Biennale is Asia’s oldest recurring contemporary art exhibition, and its founding was never purely an art-world decision. Gwangju is the city where, in May 1980, a student-led pro-democracy uprising was put down by the South Korean military at a cost of hundreds of civilian lives — an event that remained politically difficult to discuss openly for years afterward. Establishing an international art biennial in the city fifteen years later was conceived partly as an act of civic healing and international reengagement, a way of turning a site associated with trauma into one associated with dialogue. That founding tension between memory and renewal still runs under nearly every edition since, even ones, like this one, that don’t address it directly.
