Dialogues: Wilhelmina Barns-Graham x Haroun Hayward at Hales Gallery, London — 5 Nov–18 Dec 2026

Installation view of Haroun Hayward's Event on the Downs at Hales Gallery, London — artist in Dialogues: Wilhelmina Barns-Graham x Haroun Hayward, Hales London, 2026

The second exhibition in Hales Gallery’s Dialogues series, which pairs artists from different generations, places new paintings and watercolours by London artist Haroun Hayward (born 1983) beside historic works from the 1950s onwards by Wilhelmina Barns-Graham (1912–2004), a pioneer of British abstraction and a key figure of the St Ives group. The gallery presents both as treating abstraction as a flexible way of processing experience rather than a fixed style, linked by colour, rhythm and movement. Barns-Graham works cited include Red, Brown + White (1954), Night Town (1958), Sea Sound (1979) and Snow Formation 4 (Red) (1979); Hayward’s new works include A Painting for Wilhelmina Barns-Graham and Drexciya, No 2 (2026). The show coincides with Barns-Graham’s retrospective at Tate St Ives.
