Antonio Mesones’ “El Sendimento de la Línea” at Galería Juan Silió, Madrid: When Sediment Meets Feeling

Berlin-based Spanish painter Antonio Mesones brings new paintings and works on paper to Galería Juan Silió, Madrid (5 November 2026 – 6 February 2027), built around the coined word “sendimento”.

Some exhibitions begin with an image; Antonio Mesones’ begins with a word that does not exist. Sendimento — described by the gallery as “un acrónimo formado por las palabras sedimento y sentimiento” — fuses the Spanish for sediment and for feeling. It is the organising idea of “El Sendimento de la Línea”, Mesones’ solo exhibition at Galería Juan Silió in Madrid, which opens on 5 November 2026 and runs until 6 February 2027.

Sediment: painting as accumulated time

The first half of the word is physical. The exhibition text speaks of the geological and temporal build-up of paint on the canvas — the layers that record how long a picture took and how it was made. In Mesones’ paintings, line is not an outline drawn around a form. It is a path the painter builds, stroke by stroke, so that each mark keeps a record of duration, pressure and the spontaneity of the hand. The works listed by the gallery are untitled acrylics from 2026, some of them large — 200 × 160 cm and 210 × 180 cm canvases — alongside smaller works on paper.

Feeling: the line as lived experience

The second half of the word adds emotion and receptivity. If sediment is what the paint leaves behind, sentimiento is what the painter and the viewer bring to it. The gallery’s text argues that by layering paint and time, the work joins matter and emotion into a single event. It is a useful key for looking: rather than searching for a subject, follow a single line across the canvas and notice where it speeds up, thickens, hesitates or is buried under another.

From Torrelavega to Berlin

Mesones was born in Torrelavega, Cantabria, in 1965. He studied teacher training in his home town and Fine Arts at the University of the Basque Country in Leioa, then moved to Lisbon to study printmaking at the Faculty of Fine Arts. A grant from the Fundación Botín took him to the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. He eventually settled in Berlin, where he co-founded the artist-run gallery Invaliden 1 with five other artists and continues to develop curatorial projects.

That printmaker’s training is worth keeping in mind: a feeling for layering, for the line as an incised trace, and for the logic of process runs through the description of these works. His paintings have been shown in Mexico, the United States, China, Portugal and Germany, and are held in collections including Los Bragales, the Pilar Citoler collection, Fundación Botín, Fundación Coca-Cola, CAC Málaga and CAM Valencia.

A curated solo show

Unusually for a commercial gallery presentation, the exhibition is curated — by Juan Bautista Peiró, whose text accompanies the show. That curatorial framing gives the exhibition a clear thesis and makes it more than a display of recent output: it reads as an argument about what a line in painting can hold.

Juan Silió and Doctor Fourquet

Galería Juan Silió, which also runs a space in Santander, has its Madrid gallery on Calle del Doctor Fourquet, the short Lavapiés street beside the Museo Reina Sofía that has become one of the city’s densest gallery clusters. A visit to Mesones can easily be combined with the neighbouring galleries and the museum — and with a three-month run, the show stays open well into the new year.

Why it matters

  • For painters: a sustained meditation on process — how a line can carry time, and how layering can become the content of a picture.
  • For collectors: new large-scale canvases and works on paper by an artist with a long international career and a presence in major Spanish private and institutional collections.
  • For Madrid visitors: a curated, thoughtful painting show in the heart of the Doctor Fourquet gallery district.
