Pierre Soulages: Outrenoir at Timothy Taylor, London — 5 Nov–12 Dec 2026

Pierre Soulages Outrenoir black painting, exhibition at Timothy Taylor, London, 2026

Timothy Taylor presents Pierre Soulages: Outrenoir, a focused exhibition of nine late paintings by the French painter Pierre Soulages (1919–2022), made between 2003 and 2021. Begun in 1979, the Outrenoir (“beyond black”) series uses black not as a colour but as a surface that catches and reflects light: layers of paint are scraped, gouged, brushed and smeared into fields that move from gloss to deep grooves. From 2004 Soulages worked only in thick impasto acrylic, and several works reveal ultramarine underlayers, a feature of the series from 1986.
