New Museum Triennial Returns in 2027 With ‘The Outside Expands’

The sixth New Museum Triennial, ‘The Outside Expands,’ runs 4 February–16 May 2027 in New York, the museum’s first triennial since its 2026 expansion.

The New Museum’s sixth Triennial, titled “The Outside Expands,” will run from 4 February to 16 May 2027 in the museum’s expanded building in Manhattan.

The exhibition is co-curated by New Museum curator Vivian Crockett and Isabella Rjeille of the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP) in Brazil, and brings together 36 artists and collectives representing 34 nations — among the most internationally focused editions of the recurring survey to date.

The show’s title references a 1979 street intervention by the Brazilian collective 3NÓS3, who taped X marks across a gallery entrance with the message “What is inside remains, what is outside expands.” The curators have used that gesture as a framework for artists whose work unsettles fixed ideas of territory and identity.

It is the New Museum’s first triennial since the public reopening of its expanded building in March 2026. More on the exhibition is at Hyperallergic. Dates and a source-linked summary are also on Art Fair’s New Museum Triennial 2027 listing.
