Verapat Sitipol’s “Stream of the Forest” at Opera Gallery Dubai: Painting the Jungle From the Inside

Thai painter Verapat Sitipol brings monumental forest paintings to Opera Gallery Dubai in Stream of the Forest, 25 November – 9 December 2026.

Dubai’s art calendar in late November tends to be dominated by fairs, glossy openings and big names. Against that backdrop, a show of slow, green, immersive painting may be exactly the counterweight a visitor needs. Verapat Sitipol’s “Stream of the Forest” at Opera Gallery Dubai runs for just two weeks, from 25 November to 9 December 2026, in the gallery’s space at Gate Village in DIFC.

Stream of the Forest: a painter between two traditions

Verapat Sitipol is a contemporary Thai painter whose training links two of Asia’s most important art schools. He studied at Silpakorn University in Bangkok — the institution at the heart of modern Thai art — and at Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan, India, the university founded by Rabindranath Tagore. According to Opera Gallery, his years in India sharpened his sensitivity to atmosphere and impermanence. Today he works between Bangkok and Kanchanaburi, a western Thai province of rivers, limestone hills and dense forest.

That double biography — the city studio and the forested province — explains much about the paintings. They are not views from a distance. They feel like the experience of standing inside the landscape, with light filtering down and water moving somewhere nearby.

Between landscape and abstraction

Sitipol works in oil on linen and at a scale that demands the body’s attention. Quiet River (2026) measures 200 × 300 cm; Roots of Sai Yok (2026), named after a national park in Kanchanaburi, is nearly as wide. Two 2025 canvases, Night in Red Sky and Forest of Blue River and Pink Mountain, are each 220 × 180 cm.

The surfaces are built from layered greens, soft shadow and rhythmic, gestural brushwork. Forms suggest trees, foliage, water and light, but they rarely settle into a specific, nameable place. The gallery describes the result as immersive yet restrained — paintings that hold the eye without overwhelming it. The titles tell a second story: pink mountains, blue rivers, a red night sky. Colour here is emotional and remembered rather than strictly observed.

For painters, this is the most useful part of the show. Sitipol’s canvases are a study in how to keep a very large surface alive with a narrow palette — how variation in mark, density and transparency can do the work that dramatic contrast would do elsewhere. For anyone who has struggled to paint foliage without fussiness, the gestural shorthand on view is worth close attention.

Landscape as lived experience

The exhibition text frames these works as landscapes of lived experience rather than scenes observed from outside. Nature is presented as constantly changing, shaped by movement, memory and time. That links Sitipol to a long lineage — from Chinese and Thai traditions of landscape as a state of mind to Western painters who dissolved the motif into atmosphere — while keeping the paintings firmly contemporary in scale and surface.

Opera Gallery in DIFC

Opera Gallery is an international network with spaces in major cities across Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the Americas. Its Dubai branch sits in Gate Village, Building 3, in the Dubai International Financial Centre, a cluster of galleries, restaurants and offices that has become one of the city’s two main gallery districts alongside Alserkal Avenue in Al Quoz. A Southeast Asian painter on this stage is a welcome sign of the region’s widening horizons: Dubai’s collector base increasingly looks east as well as west.

Why it matters

  • For collectors: a chance to see monumental new canvases by a Thai painter rarely shown in the Gulf, in a short two-week window.
  • For painters: a masterclass in scale, layered colour and gestural economy.
  • For Dubai audiences: a contemplative alternative to the busy late-November season.
