New Museum Triennial 2027 — Dates & Theme

The New Museum’s recurring survey of emerging art returns with its sixth edition, titled “The Outside Expands,” opening 4 February 2027 in the museum’s newly expanded building. Co-curated by New Museum curator Vivian Crockett and MASP curator Isabella Rjeille, the show brings together 36 artists and collectives from 34 nations — described by Hyperallergic as the most internationally focused edition to date — after what the museum describes as a five-year pause since the previous Triennial.

About the Exhibition

The curators take their title from “X Galeria (X Gallery),” a 1979 urban intervention by the Brazilian collective 3NÓS3, staged during the US-backed civil-military dictatorship that ruled Brazil for more than two decades. Members of 3NÓS3 duct-taped large X’s across gallery entrances in São Paulo overnight, carrying the message “O que está dentro fica, o que está fora se expande” — “What is inside remains, what is outside expands.” The curators use that gesture as a lens for artists who question fixed ideas of territory and identity. The exhibition opens in the museum’s newly expanded building, a project doubling the venue’s size with an annex designed by Shohei Shigematsu of OMA, working with Rem Koolhaas.

Curators

Vivian Crockett joined the New Museum’s curatorial team in 2022 and previously worked as an assistant curator at the Dallas Museum of Art; at the New Museum she co-organized the Wangechi Mutu survey with Margot Norton. Isabella Rjeille has been on the curatorial team of Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand (MASP) in Brazil since 2016, and has curated monographic shows of Cinthia Marcelle, Maria Martins and Lucia Laguna, as well as the 2019 group exhibition “Histórias Feministas: artistas depois de 2000.”

A Sixth Edition

The New Museum Triennial began in 2009, co-organized by Massimiliano Gioni, Lauren Cornell and Laura Hoptman. Later editions include “The Ungovernables” (2012, curated by Eungie Joo), “Songs for Sabotage” (2018, Alex Gartenfeld and Gary Carrion-Murayari) and “Soft Water Hard Stone” (2021, Margot Norton and Jamillah James). “The Outside Expands” follows a gap longer than the Triennial’s usual three-year cycle.
