On the day the sea handed out its titles, the rhinoceros waited for a crown, and the knight polished his shield for nothing in particular. The registrar — a small orange fish, no larger than a cupped hand — wrote the same word beside every name: Noble. A whale sealed the record with a stroke of her golden tail. From that afternoon on, rank was measured only by how much room a creature was willing to make for someone else.
