At dawn, the passengers in the small boat saw a different road written on every wave. They followed them all, and by evening every road had converged beneath the rhinoceros’s golden horn. A whale passed by without a sound, as if she had known the way the entire time. Only then did they understand: it was never the sea hiding the order — it was the noise in their own hearts.
