In The Nobles of the Inner Sea, Mahshid Moochani’s newest body of work, the ocean does something unusual: it stops being a location. There’s no horizon line separating “here” from “elsewhere,” no sense that these rhinoceroses, elephants, and mermaids have travelled anywhere to arrive at this world. The water is simply where memory, imagination, silence, and transformation already live — a psychological terrain rendered as a physical one.

The paintings share a visual grammar that rewards a second look. Gold recurs constantly — on horns, medallions, collars — and it isn’t decoration. Across the series, gold sheds its usual meaning as wealth or status and becomes something closer to an inner nobility: a quality earned through gentleness rather than birthright. A rhinoceros can carry it. So can a dolphin. So, implicitly, can the viewer.

Then there’s the animals themselves, and the strange civility between them. Elephants share frame space with knighted rhinos, giraffes accompany violin-playing mermaids, hot air balloons drift indifferently overhead. Nothing here follows a food chain or a natural order — humanity, animal, sky, and seabed exist on the same visual plane, without hierarchy. It’s a deliberate refusal, and it’s what gives the series its particular calm: modern noise is present (you can feel it in the movement of the water, the crowding of balloons), but something steadier runs beneath it.

Each of the thirteen paintings arrives with its own short story — not a caption explaining what’s happening, but an independent piece of fiction that shares the painting’s atmosphere without ever locking down its meaning. Moochani is explicit about this distinction: the texts don’t open the paintings’ locks, they leave the door open. A reader can carry a story into the image, set it back down, or invent their own entirely.

The result is less a themed exhibition than a coherent interior world — one where, as Moochani puts it elsewhere in her practice, peace was never a destination to travel toward. It was already the nature of the place.
